Cape Town travel destinations: False Bay
Lying on the eastern side of Table Mountain, this region is historically quite old (in South African terms!), as the harbour at Simons Town was developed by the British into a formidable naval base in the 19th century. The area basically includes the whole of False Bay, which stretches from Gordon's Bay along the coastline towards Cape Town, all the way to the charming fishing village of Kalk Bay and onto Fish Hoek. The most impressive feature of False Bay is its lovely beaches, where the water is between 5 and 7ºC warmer than on the Atlantic Seaboard side. Simons Town boasts lovely beaches as well as the penguin sanctuary at Boulders Beach. First having become known as a holiday destination, the area has retained much of this laid-back charm.
