Cape Town's Table Mountain

Table Mountain, Cape Town's most famous landmark can be seen from most aeroplanes approaching the city: an impressive monolith with a table-top flat summit.

  • Over 1000m high
  • Walk or ride to top via cable car
  • One of the city’s top attractions

Table Mountain towers over the city centre, which lies between the mountain and the Atlantic Ocean. Various suburbs lie against its slopes and there is hardly a neighbourhood in Cape Town from which some view of the mountain cannot be seen. Most visitors opt to take the revolving cable car to the top, certainly an extremely scenic ride. But walking up the mountain is very rewarding, especially as it does not take a great amount of fitness or skill. Most hikes take between two and four hours.

There is a restaurant at the top for a scenic cup of tea or refreshments of a more substantial nature. Folklore: Legend holds that when the mountain is covered by tablecloth-like layer of clouds, that an 18th century Dutch pirate by name of Jan van Hunks is having a smoking contest with the devil. It is also believed that the San, the first people in the Cape, regarded Table Mountain as sacred.
